Why Tesla Dominates US Electric Car Sales

Rolling through another month of US electric car sales, I’m struck again by how much a few models dominate sales. Actually, I’m struck by how much Tesla’s two high-end (expensive) cars dominate US electric car sales. Before I go further, I should note that Tesla’s sales numbers are not official — they are estimated based on […]

Japan Electric Car Sales Drop As Country Awaits 2nd-Gen EVs

The Japanese electric vehicle market is comprised almost entirely of Japanese auto manufacturers (unsurprisingly), which makes the market an interesting contrast to free-for-all markets like the US. The Nissan LEAF has over the past few years more or less dominated the market. Though, the first-generation Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid (PHEV) had respectable sales as well — which makes the […]

China Electric Car Sales — Incentives Drag The Market Down

The Chinese market had 6,260 new EVs registered in January, far from the 15,275 units of January 2016, dragging down the plug-in market share (of new cars sold) to just 0.25% — far below the 1.45% of 2016. Considering the seasonality of the Chinese PEV market, where the first quarter is always the slowest selling (due to […]

#ElonTweets: Tesla Not Likely Going Over 100 kWh For Model S/X, Model 3 Not Getting 100kWh Battery, & More

As he tends to do, Elon Musk went on a Twitter rampage, responding to questions from the Twittersphere. In doing so, and as he’s also in the habit of doing, he shed light on some rather interesting details about the Model S and X battery size, Model 3 battery size as limited by the physical footprint of the vehicle, and a few tips on stripping down a Tesla for maximum performance.

Best Selling Electric Car In Europe Is Renault Zoe (2016 Electric Car Sales)

The European EV market had approximately 30,000 registrations last month, down 11% over the same month last year. This sales slip, however, had to do with the incentives-derived sales rush of the last quarter of 2015. Last month, though, the top spots were yet again influenced by the Dutch market sales peak: #1 VW Passat GTE – […]

Electric Car Sales Grew 51% In December & 30% In 2016 (US Electric Car Sales Report)

The EV market as a whole saw 30% growth for 2016 (compared to 2016) and 51% for December 2016 (compared to December 2015), which would be great for normal cars but may seem a bit weak on the surface for those of us who know how fast EV sales should and could be growing. But remember that 2016 was more of a prep year than a breakout year. This year (2017) and next (2018) are likely to be the big breakout years, thanks to the real arrival of the Chevy Bolt and the expected arrival of the Tesla Model 3.
