May US electric car sales numbers are in, and there are no big surprises at the top. #1 is the best-selling electric car in history, the Nissan LEAF. #2 (based on my estimate) is the Tesla Model S. And #3 is the Chevy Volt.
After those three, it is the usual plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in the clear second tier, this month shaking out in the following order: #4 Ford Fusion Energi, #5 BMW i3, #6 Toyota Prius Plug-In, #7 Ford C-Max Energi.
Unfortunately, most plug-in cars saw a decline in sales compared to May 2014. Only the BMW i3, Cadillac ELR, and Chevy Spark EV saw an increase.
In terms of market share, the LEAF accounted for 20% of May EV sales, and 19% of YTD sales; the Model S accounted for 16% of May sales, and 22% of YTD sales; and the Chevy Volt accounted for 16% in May, and 11% for the YTD.
