I know, I know — we’re all eagerly awaiting actual information and pics from tesla regarding the Model 3. This isn’t that, but it’s fun. One of our readers reached out to me about some Tesla Model 3 renderings he and his son had put together, eager to share them with more people. As any father can attest, there’s only one thing luckier than having a 13-year-old son, and that’s having a 13-year-old son who shares some of your passions.  For my son Nathan and me, one of those shared passions is cars, and ever since the scream of, “Dad warn me the next time you stomp on it!,” when we test drove a Tesla Model S, we’ve both been anticipating the Tesla for the masses, the Model 3.

That test drive was in late 2014, and now that the great unveiling of the Model 3 is almost here, we can’t stop talking about what it will be like. So here are our predictions.

We’ve always thought the Model S cut a similar profile to the Mazda 3, which is no big surprise if you know that Franz von Holzhausen was Mazda’s director of design before becoming Tesla’s senior design executive. Hence, Nathan’s vision of the Tesla Model 3 is of similar footprint and shape to Mazda’s best-selling car. There would be enough of a difference in size to justify its significantly lower price compared to the Model S and X while sharing an undeniable familial design esthetic.

I took a different approach; if Tesla were to make its entry-level car a practical two-box people mover, it could do far worse than to borrow from its former collaborator Mercedes and its B-Class. This type of vehicle would be very easy to do with the Tesla chassis design, and with its ultra-low center of gravity, be the best-handling family and cargo mover ever built.

So, will the Model 3 be sleek and stylish per the 13-year-old’s musing, or will it put function ahead of fashion per good ol’ Dad’s ideas? Either way, we can’t wait!

  1. Son’s drawing is much more sporty looking but I hope to god we don’t see the red highlights like on a VW GTI.

  2. I’m not a fan of the grilless front end of the actual model x and the new model 3 and I would like to see something there like the kids drawing. The prototype model 3 front end reminds me of an early GM Saturn.
