Tesla Model Y vs. Porsche Taycan In Efficiency

The Tesla Model Y and the Porsche Taycan go head to head in this efficiency comparison. The Model Y has been spotted pretty much everywhere, and soon customers will be taking deliveries of Tesla’s latest highly anticipated EV. When it comes to efficiency, the Taycan offers little while the Model Y seems to score big, according to the EPA.

In the tweet above, Third Row Tesla shares a screenshot of the EPA review comparing the two vehicles. The 2020 Tesla Model Y Performance AWD scores a combined 121 MPGe for city and highway driving (an efficiency equivalence rating for EVs, which don’t use gasoline so don’t have a MPG rating). 1 gallon of gasoline is around 33.7 kWh of electricity.

The estimated annual “fuel cost” for the Model Y is $550, and it is estimated to cost 91 cents to drive 25 miles. The savings in fuel costs over 5 years compared to the average new vehicle is around $4,000. Also, you get 315 miles in total range.

The 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S only scored a 68 combined MPGe. The annual “fuel cost” is $950, which is $400 more than the Model Y’s. To drive 25 miles costs $1.62. However, you still save some when it comes to fuel costs over 5 years compared to the average new vehicle: $2,000. The Porsche Taycan Turbo S has 192 miles in total range.

When it comes to practicality, one would opt to choose the Model Y over the Taycan. However, this doesn’t mean the Taycan is a “bad” car. It’s created for a niche market — many people who buy Porsche don’t do so for normal everyday use, as people do for a Model 3 or even the Model Y. The Porsche is considered a luxury brand with race-track performance (which is not typically efficient), and those who can afford the Taycan would probably go with it simply because it’s a Porsche — and this is great for the EV movement, since we need EVs for everyone.

It is interesting to see this comparison, though, because this is Tesla’s newest vehicle that is in production and people are excited especially, those who are waiting to take delivery. Soon, we will see more Model Ys on the road along with how-to videos, comparison guides, and really cool and unique wraps.
