Nissan has announced its goal to achieve carbon neutrality across operations and the life cycle of its products by 2050

PARIS/LINCOLN (Feb. 8, 2021) – Nissan, in collaboration with the Arbor Day Foundation, will be setting-up new roots across Europe. Through a joint initiative to plant 20,000 trees in 2021, the partnership will benefit local communities and drive forward ambitions to combat climate change, reduce air pollution and ultimately enrich those lives of future generations.

Following a successful decade of LEAF, the world’s first mass-market electric vehicle, and its support for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals1 (SDGs) through the Nissan Green Program 2022, the company launches this project as part of its continued long-term commitment to address environmental challenges for a more sustainable planet.

Sites across the UK, France, Germany and the Netherlands have all been purposely selected to benefit from the reforestation program. From reducing flooding to save a children’s play area outside London, to reconstituting woodlands badly impacted by bark beetles on the outskirts of Paris. Each urban location endeavours to serve a bigger social need to make sure local environments are a better place to live for everyone.

Nissan’s ambition will expand upon the initiatives under the Nissan Green Program and the company’s ongoing work to minimize the carbon footprint of its products and operations aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050. Nissan’s commitment builds on its decades-long programs to reduce emissions and provide electric vehicle technologies that support the environment and society.

Since 2010, LEAF owners have prevented more than 2.5 million tons of CO2 emissions from entering the environment. A remarkable achievement which will positively impact our environment for generations to come.

“The conscious decision made by our owners to choose electric continues to aid our ability in achieving wider electrification goals and creates a greener, more sustainable future,” said Arnaud Charpentier, Region Vice President, Product Strategy and Pricing, Nissan AMIEO.

“We have a responsibility to ensure our innovations continue to enrich people’s lives and have outlined clear targets to maintain this mission. By 2022 we plan to have a 40% reduction in CO2 emission from all new cars and expect 50% of our line-up to be electrified by early 2024.”

The Arbor Day Foundation is the largest non-profit membership organisation dedicated to planting trees. With over one million members worldwide, and with the help of partners, the foundation has planted more than 400 million trees globally over the past 50 years.

“Nature-based climate solutions not only mitigate the environmental impact of daily business operations but also protect the ecosystems and economies that people and wildlife alike rely upon. Our partnership with Nissan allows us to further this work around the world,” said Dan Lambe, President of the Arbor Day Foundation.

EV drivers have continued to make a positive impact on the environment through their decision to adopt a more sustainable mobility solution. To celebrate their contributions, Nissan is calling on all LEAF drivers to submit their clean air kilometres, to showcase the positive impact they have had made for planet.

To submit your clean air kilometres and have a Nissan tree planted in your name share a picture of your LEAF mileage with #LEAF10YearsChallenge.
