Citroën’s pioneering AMI is the recipient of the ‘Technology Award’ in this year’s Auto Express New Car Awards. The ‘Technology Award’ from Auto Express continues an impressive run of form for Citroën AMI, following on from its success in the BBC Top Gear magazine Electric Awards 2020 and in the GQ Car Awards 2021, where it was named ‘Microcar of the Year’.
Unveiled in 2020, Citroën AMI was introduced by the brand as a response to the challenges of future urban mobility, with a focus on environmental awareness. A 100% electric mobility solution with a range of up to 43 miles and a 5.5 kWh battery that takes just three hours to charge from a standard electric socket, Citroën AMI provides inner-city drivers with an efficient zero emissions method of personal transportation.
Citroën AMI is the ideal vehicle for navigating urban life, with complete access across all city centre zones without paying congestion charges. With its ultra-compact 2.41m length and 7.20m turning diameter, city travel and parking are universally accessible. Officially classed as an electric quadricycle, AMI is accessible to everyone from the age of 14 in France, with no driver’s license needed. In the UK, this rises to 17 years of age, with licence requirements in line with a regular passenger vehicle.
In addition to the original two-seater AMI, an expanded AMI range was announced in May 2021 in the form of a new version called MY AMI CARGO – a mobility solution designed for last-mile delivery service providers and other business users operating in urban areas. With the passenger seat removed, MY AMI CARGO offers a payload of up to 140kg and a maximum load capacity of 400-litres.
Steve Fowler, Editor-In Chief of Auto Express, said: “The Citroen Ami lands its killer blow in our Technology Award with some exceptionally clever, almost Alec Issigonis-levels of thinking. Here, the Ami nails its brief perfectly. The smart design and engineering has a laser-like focus on simplicity and cost. It is perfect for congested city streets; a minute turning circle and wheel on each corner stance matter more here than its 28mph top speed. Most of all, though, the Ami is enormous fun.”
Auto Express’ New Car Awards celebrate the best models and technologies each year, following rigorous testing, assessment, and insightful reviews from the expert panel of Auto Express judges. While categories cover all vehicle types, including city cars, luxury models and alternative fuel vehicles, Auto Express also highlights automotive innovation, technology and engineering within the New Car Awards.
Eurig Druce, Managing Director of Citroën UK, said: “I was very pleased to hear the news that Auto Express has recognised Citroën AMI as the winner of its ‘Technology Award’ in this year’s New Car Awards.
“Citroën AMI stands as testament to the hard work and dedication that our team puts into developing automotive technology and innovation, striving to provide people with mobility solutions to suit all needs. Since its reveal last year, Citroën AMI has received high praise from the public and judges alike.”
Citroën UK has launched a ‘Register Your Interest’ form for AMI, to gauge public interest for its potential introduction to the UK market.
