The first plug-in vehicle not sold in the US to reach 100,000 global sales is the constantly delayed Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid.
As we’ve stated before, a key reason it has been delayed for years in the US is reportedly that sales in Europe and Japan were much higher than anticipated and supplies limited.
A whopping 66,000 Outlander Plug-in Hybrids have been sold in Europe so far, and ~34,000 in Japan, according to Hybrid Cars.
I think you know well enough which cars beat the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid to 100,000, but the details are reportedly as follows:
- Nissan LEAF (January 2014) — up to ~220,000 now
- Tesla Model S (Q4 2015) — up to ~120,000 now
- Chevy Volt, including European & Australian versions Opel/Vauxhall Ampera and Holden Volt (October 2015) — up to ~110,000 now
Who’s next?
Back to the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, the SUV is supposed to come to the US market later this year, but we’ve heard that many times before and there’s a bit of question about Mitsubishi’s ability to survive its most recent troubles, so I’ll believe it when I see it.
