350 kW ABB Fast Charger Introduced At Hannover Messe

ABB will be launching a 350 kilowatt (kW) plug-in electric vehicle charger at Hannover Messe. At 350 kW, that means it is essentially the highest power electric vehicle charger in the world. For some reference, a Tesla Supercharger’s output is generally around 120 kW and a normal “fast charger” is typically around 50 kW.

The new plug-in electric vehicle (EV) charger, dubbed the Terra High Power charger, will reportedly be capable of adding up to 200 kilometers of range to an EV in around just 8 minutes or so. That presumes, of course, that such an EV is equipped to handle such a charge (and without overheating and accompanying battery degradation).

ABB apparently plans for the new EV charger to be deployed along highway rest stops in busy parts of the world’s roadway systems. Presumably, this means that the new chargers will be deployed in Europe before too long, and thus will improve the viability of EV use for those who travel long distances regularly there.

The press release on the matter provides more: “ABB chargers are being installed around the world, and they have recently been selected for use by Electrify America, the biggest electric vehicle infrastructure project to date in the United States. With more than 6,500 DC fast charging stations installed in 60 countries, ABB is a global leader in DC fast charging.

“ABB’s product portfolio, which includes charging technologies for electric cars, buses and trucks, as well as solutions for the electrification of ships, railways and cableways, firmly establishes it as a global champion in e-mobility. To further showcase its e-mobility leadership through its partnership with Formula E, the world’s first fully electric international FIA motorsport series, a Formula E race car, and driving simulators will be on display to visitors to the ABB booth.”

That last bit being a reference to the company’s presence at Hannover Messe. We’ll keep you posted as more is revealed.
