Sandy Munro Talks Tesla Cybertruck And Its Competitors

In a short five minute video, Sandy Munro, who recently conducted an extensive Model Y teardown, shared his thoughts about Tesla’s hot new Cybertruck and its potential competitors.

In a short five minute video, Sandy Munro, who recently conducted an extensive Model Y teardown, shared his thoughts about Tesla’s hot new Cybertruck and its potential competitors.

Munro, who once called attention to the Model 3’s early panel gaps, has gradually come from the role of notable critic to that of a top admirer of Tesla. Oddly, as reported in CleanTechnica, this has been ignored in the mainstream media. They were once all over Munro’s criticism of Tesla. When it comes to his current take on Tesla vehicles, though, there are crickets.

The video above gives me those East Texas Ford Truck music vibes that would often play on my TV when I was a kid. Being from Northwest Louisiana (Shreveport), we were a part of the Ark-La-Tex area that often got ads from East Texas businesses, including the truck dealers.

Along with the music are these beautiful trucks: Ford, Ram, and then the photo of the Tesla Cybertruck from the reveal. Munro leads the video while standing next to the Tesla Model Y. He explains that he is doing this video because people want to know more about the Tesla Cybertruck and its competitors.

The trucks that Munro compares with the Cybertruck are:

  •  2020 Chevy Silverado
    • 1500 Crew Cab 4X4-High Country
    • 3.0L Duramax 16 Diesel
    • 10-Speed Automatic
  • 2020 Ford F-150
    • SuperCrew 4X4-Limited
    • 3.5 H.O. EcoBoost V6 Gas
    • 10-Speed Automatic
  • 2020 Ram 1500
    • Crew Cab 4X4-Limited
    • 3.0L EcoDiesel V6
    • 8 Speed Automatic

Munro points out that these would be the three top pickup truck competitors. In 2019, he explains, there were around 2 million of these trucks sold. He also touches on brand loyalty in Michigan and admits that it will be tough for Tesla. He says that Tesla will need to pay close attention to its competitors in order to make a dent in the market.

The truck market, he says, is on a completely different playing field from the rest of the automotive industry. “When you’re competing against these guys, you’re competing against the big boys,” Munro says.

I agree with him there — everyone loves their favorite brand of trucks and it could be challenging for them to switch. I think that Tesla has a chance. It has its own unique fan base as well, and many of those fans have been waiting for Tesla to make a truck. Those of us who do get the Cybertruck will undoubtedly share our love for the vehicle with our friends and family.

This will include test rides, drives, and being seen around town in that odd-shaped truck — it is attention-grabbing and some may try it just because it’s different. Then, they’ll fall in love.

Munro also notes that these three trucks have heavy-duty versions and says that “the electric motor to the half-ton truck isn’t quite fair.”

The Tesla Cybertruck Tri-Motor AWD will have an EPA estimated range of 500 miles. It will be able to tow 14,000 pounds, and has a payload of 3,500 pounds. It will also be able to launch from 0 to 60 mph at 2.9 seconds. That will certainly set it apart. It’s starting price is $69,900.
