The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (US DOT) Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is supporting more efficient bus fleets. The DOT announced approximately $130 million in grant selections through the Low- or No-Emission (Low-No) Grant program. The funds support the purchase or lease of zero-emission and low-emission transit buses and supporting facilities, such as charging infrastructure.
In total, 41 projects in 40 states and the District of Columbia will receive funding through the program. Below are the projects, with their funding total being $129,956,625.
Topping the list is Alaska’s capital, the City and Borough of Juneau. The City Newsroom of Juneau press offered more details:
“The City and Borough of Juneau will receive $5 million in federal grant funding to purchase new electric buses and associated charging infrastructure for Capital Transit. Through previous grant awards, CBJ’s first electric bus is scheduled to arrive in October. After that, seven more aging diesel buses are due to be replaced in 2022.
The $5 million is from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration (FTA) through the Low- or No-Emission (Low-No) Grant Program, which provides funding for state and local governmental authorities to purchase or lease zero-emission and low-emission transit buses. CBJ is one of 41 projects in 40 states sharing $130 million in federal Low-No grant funding. CBJ has received other Low-No grant funding in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
Juneau’s first electric bus, which will be from Proterra, will go into use as soon as it arrives. Capital Transit currently uses three electric cars as support vehicles, purchased through grant funding from the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities.”

AAMU receives FTA grant for more zero-emission electric buses
“Alabama A&M University’s transit system is among projects in more than 40 states that will receive a portion of some $130 million in grants from the Federal Transit Administration to boost low or no-emission transportation and related infrastructure.
AAMU’s Bulldog Transit System (BTS) has been awarded over $2.2 million to buy additional zero-emission electric buses. AAMU says these new buses will allow the school to replace diesel buses that have reached the end of their usefulness.
BTS and Proterra formed a partnership to deliver clean, quiet transportation to AAMU and the surrounding community.”
