Porsche Cayenne PHEV Coming In 2014

When I see Porsche or Ferrari electric vehicles, for some reason, I think, “Wow, that is awesome!”

(Oh yeah, that’s because they are awesome.)

Not only are they awesome because these vehicles are beauties of human workmanship and care, but also because such cars will inspire more people to love electric vehicles. It opens people’s minds to the fact that electric vehicles aren’t simply for “greenies” or for those looking to save money on gas (and save the country from oil wars), but that they are for anyone and everyone. It opens people’s minds to the fact that electric vehicles can be fast, fun, hot, sexy, beautiful, and of any shape or size you want.

The Porsche Cayenne plug-in hybrid-electric (PHEV) SUV, likely to be released in 2014, won’t be the greenest vehicle out there. It won’t cut oil use nearly as much as I’d like. But it will have an impact. Certainly, it will have a perception impact.

Porsche already sells Cayenne and Panamera hybrids (Cayenne S Hybrid pics above & below), but PHEV technology is one step forward toward a clean vehicle future. Notably, however, the EV-only mode on the Cayenne PHEV is only expected to have a range of about 15 miles… but we’ll have to wait to know for sure.

If you’re going to be in the market for a luxury EV SUV, I have to say that I’d recommend the Tesla Model X. (Beyond being fully electric, the Model X will have falcon doors!) But supporting traditional car companies’ efforts to green their offerings is certainly worth something, as is telling your neighbor that your Porsche SUV is an electric vehicle.

What do you think of this Porsche Cayenne PHEV news? Love it? Hate it? Don’t really give a…?
