A commenter on the Tesla Motors Club forum by the name of “bobbykansara” recently posted the first report (and picture), that I’m aware of, of a Tesla Model X windshield that was cracked during regular vehicle use.
The cracked windshield in question (seen in the picture below) was apparently the result of a large rock hitting it while driving. Here’s the full comment:
Am I the first to have a cracked Model X windshield?
Driving back from Mount Rushmore on a family road trip for the long weekend, a large rock hit my Model X windshield and put a medium sized crack in it.
For those who have been wondering about replacement costs for the windshield, I can report that the cost estimate from my local service center is $2290 before tax.
The attached picture shows the extent of the crack; I apologize for the crappy photo.
A commenter by the name of “jomo25” chimed in, though, noting that his Model X windshield was cracked awhile back:
No, you aren’t the first. Mine has been cracked for 2 weeks. All the way across.
Not that that was a title I was seeking or proud of.
It started from a rock strike on the passenger side. Right near where the visor is anchored. It ended up expanding all the way across. But amazingly it went up about 8 inches then went across, so it is luckily completely out of my line of sight. So I’m in no rush to replace it knowing it might happen again with all the damn rocks on our roadways here in AZ.
Not really a surprise. These things happen. The repair pricing is interesting, though. I had expected the replacement of the enormous windshield (the biggest in a production vehicle) to actually be a fair bit more expensive than $2290.

One of the “options” from National Car Insurance is GLASS BREAKAGE which costs only about $40 or so a year and covers TOTAL REPLACEMENT COST. Check your insurance coverage and if you do not already have such, you MIGHT want to consider adding this trivial cost option? I did, since I took a rock strike in my 2015 Model S windshield in January….and had to pay the $500 deductible on my policy rather than get it replaced without cost to me.
Yeah it’s worth it, but does claiming on the windshield affect your premiums? Here in the U.K. if you call your insurance provider, they will send Autoglass out to fill the crash with resin – and should that eventually break (which is unlikely) they will pay the full cost of replacement without it affecting your premiums; so long as you get Autoglass out first.
I’m not sure how it works in the U.S.; but if it affected my premiums, I would rather just pay for the replacement myself.
And when was a rock hitting a windshield considered news? Sheesh.

Since this giant windshield (largest in a production vehicle) was launched, people have been wondering what the price of replacing it would be. That’s the news.
That chip needs to be fixed before it cracks.
That’s free with AAA, and down there, no one will ever see it.
