We’ve been waiting, waiting, waiting… and looks like we won’t have to wait much longer. An Illinois resident noted yesterday that his Tesla Model S P90D (with the Ludicrous option… of course) is now “in transit.”
Of course, others on the Tesla Motors Club forum (where he announced it) quickly requested that he record some acceleration and reaction videos asap. I’m sure many of you, like me, are waiting eagerly for such videos. The Tesla P85D reaction videos are already… insane enough that it’s hard it imagine reactions getting more… ludicrous (apologies — I’ve had too much coffee), but who knows?
For a refresher, while the Tesla P85D can accelerate from 0 mph to 60 mph in 3.1 or 3.2 seconds, the Tesla P90D with “Ludicrous” mode can do so in 2.8 seconds. If you take into account the fact that an electric car with instant torque is much quicker off the line than a non-electric, this arguably makes the Tesla P90D the quickest production car in history. At the very least, it crushes these super-fast Lamborghinis, Porsches, Ferraris, and McLarens.
I absolutely love the P85D, but I have to say that it was approaching the border of uncomfortably quick. It didn’t make me feel nauseous or make my chest hurt like it did for comedian and actor Robert Llewellyn, but it did seem to fit the label “insane.” Do I want to test out the Ludicrous P90D? Certainly! Would I prefer one over a P85D? I doubt it. Am I eager to see Ludicrous P90D reaction videos? Of course!… even if they end up being more or less the same as P85D reaction videos.
Let’s just hope nobody passes out or has a heart attack while stepping on Ludicrous mode.
By the way, the P90D and 90D have officially received EPA range ratings, and they are the same as the P85D and 85D, respectively. That makes no sense, right? Well, the reason is that Tesla hasn’t actually had the EPA test the vehicles, so they automatically receive the same rating as the P85D and 85D. So, don’t stress if you see stupid headlines claiming that Tesla lied and there’s no improvement. Tesla has repeatedly stated that the 90 kWh options offer about 6% more range.
