It’s been more than a year since Detroit Electric pledged to bring production of a new Lotus-based electric sports car to the Motor City. Well as we recently learned, that isn’t happening, as a production facility in the heart of England’s car manufacturing center was selected instead.
But Detroit Electric supposedly remains commited to the Detroit area, and The Truth About Cars decided to stop in on their offices in downtown Detroit. Unlike last time, when the office was empty of any sign of life, TTAC found a few Detroit Electric employees doing what appeared to be actual work.
Right now Detroit Electric employs just eight people in Detroit, though they hope to increase that number to 20 by the end of the year. The original plan called for a manufacturing facility building 200 cars a year and employing about 100 people. In other words, Detroit Electric is still way behind the ball on their promises, and now they’ve also decided to focus their marketing efforts on Asia and Europe, as their application for waivers as a small-scale car manufacturer are seemingly stalled.
Does one office and a handful of employees make Detroit Electric more…Detroit? Tell us in the comments below.
