“There’s no Canada like French Canada…!” are the only lyrics I remember from South Park’s Canadian-themed take on the Wizard of Oz, and the first thing I thought of when reading that the Renault Twizy would soon go on sale in Canada. HybridCars reports that the Azra Network has been selected as the distributor of the Renault Twizy throughout Canada, and the first vehicles could be delivered as soon as September.
There are however a few roadblocks in place before sales can begin, chief of which is how to classify the low-speed electric vehicle. The Twizy will be offered in two flavors, a 40 KPH/25 MPH version that here in America could only be registered as a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV), and a 80 KPH/50 MPH version that’s more city car than NEV. It’s definitely a different kind of electric vehicle, as is the ordering process, which begins with a phone call to Azra, who then takes your information and brings the Twizy to you.
For right now, the Twizy is Renaults most successful electric vehicle, and the only one it’s importing to North America. Renault hasn’t had a presence in America in a quarter-century, and frankly, few people miss the maker of Le Car. The Twizy isn’t likely to do much to raise Americans’ opinion of Renault. But our more polite and apologetic neighbors to the north might just find the Twizy to their liking.
