It’s never easy following in the footsteps of a media giant like Elon Musk and Tesla Motors, but Detroit Electric is determined to make its dream of a Lotus-based electric sports car happen. Even though the Detroit Electric SP:01 has been delayed more than once, they want the world to know that prototype testing is underway in Europe.
Detroit Electric burst onto the scene last year with the promise of bringing electric car manufacturing to the Detroit area by the end of 2013. That didn’t happen. Nor did a backup promise of production, which has since relocated from Detroit to Holland.
Based on the Lotus Exige coupe, the Detroit Electric SP:01 will have a $135,000 price tag should it ever make it past the prototype phase. For now, it’s all testing, though the company promises more updates “in the coming weeks”, which is a bit too open-ended to bet on.
