I’m not shy about criticizing electric car commercials — many are boring, too nerdy, and too focused on the green side of EVs. Very few have tried to capture the fun of EVs, which is indeed one of their greatest consumer benefits, and what I think will drive EV adoption to the mass market… that and the convenience of never (or almost never) having to visit a gas station, and waking up every (or almost every) morning to a “full tank.”
If you read my review of the Audi A3 e-tron, you know that I much prefer the driving experience of almost every fully electric car I’ve driven (including the Renault Zoe, Nissan LEAF, BMW i3, and of course Tesla Model S). But it’s still much more enjoyable to drive than a straight gasmobile.
In any case, though, to give people the experience of electric drive, you have to first attract them to the car, and that is typically done through commercials. This commercial below nails it because it quite effectively makes the A3 e-tron look sexy and fun, and also green (implied subtly via the various green neighborhood folk — a solar installer, a bike-riding young lady, a bumper-sticker-sticking Prius driver, and a backyard farmer — gawking at the A3 e-tron). Check it out:
Good one, eh?
Plug in and take names.
