While it has dipped its toes in the electric vehicle market, Reuters reports that Audi is planning to make a big push towards electric vehicles across its whole lineup. The Audi electric cars will be focused on performance, led by the Audi R8 e-tron, which has solved earlier range issues.
Audi is keen to play catch up with Tesla, which is siphoning off sales from traditional luxury automakers and dominating the news cycle. Audi had initially been reluctant to commit to electric cars, after issues giving the R8 e-tron enough range and performance to justify the price. Those problems were solved thanks to new battery chemistry, and the technology could spread to other cars and SUVs.
There have been additional rumors that an Audi Q7 e-tron could be built to compete with the Tesla Model X, and the plug-in hybrid Audi A3 e-tron is slated to go on sale this December in Germany. Every model in Audi’s lineup could end up with a hybrid variant, though the electric models are probably reserved for performance only.
All because Tesla showed it could be done.
