15 Interesting Europe Electric Car Charts

The European Alternative Fuels Observatory recently reached out to let me know about the fascinating electric car data it aggregates and organizes for the European market. Its website is a treasure trove of fun electric car sales charts and tables. I just picked out 15 of my favorites for this article.

Top-Selling Fully Electric Cars

Europe BEV 2016 April
Across Europe, the big winners in the pure-EV market are the Nissan LEAF and Renault Zoe. The Tesla Model S is solidly at #3, the Volkswagen e-Golf at #4, and the BMW i3 at #5.

For the plug-in vehicle market as a whole, market share for the top pure EVs for 2016 so far is as follows:

  • Nissan LEAF = 13.1%
  • Renault Zoe = 11.9%
  • Tesla Model S = 7.2%
  • Volkswagen e-Golf = 4.7%
  • BMW i3 = 3.3% (note that the i3 reaches 5.5% if you add in the REx)
  • Kia Soul = 2.3%
  • Mercedes B250e = 1.6%
  • Volkswagen e-Up! = 1.3%
  • Peugeot iOn = 1.2%
  • Citroen C-Zero = 0.9%
  • Others = 1.8%

Top-Selling Plug-In Hybrid Electric Cars

Europe PHEV 2016 April
The Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid dominates the European PHEV market (which seems to be a repeated cause of delay for its entry into the US market — combined with limited supply, of course). While very different vehicles, the Volkswagen Golf GTE and Volvo XC90 T8 are closely competing for #2. With a solid hold on #4, it’s worth noting the Audi A3 e-tron is essentially the same car as the Volkswagen Golf GTE.

For the plug-in vehicle market as a whole, market share for the top pure EVs for 2016 so far is as follows:

  • Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid = 13.1%
  • Volkswagen Golf GTE = 6.3%
  • Volvo XC90 T8 = 5.7%
  • Audi A3 e-Tron = 4.8%
  • Volkswagen Passat GTE = 3.4%
  • BMW X5 xDrive 40e = 3.4%
  • Mercedes C350e = 2.7%
  • BMW i3 REx = 2.2% (note that the i3 reaches 5.5% if you add in the pure-electric i3)
  • Volvo V60 T8 = 1.9%
  • BMW 225xe Active Tourer = 1.6%
  • Others = 5.5%

Top-Selling EV Models In Germany

Germany Top EV Models
It’s a bit surprising to see that the top 3 pure EVs are non-German models. I guess that demonstrates well the global competitiveness of the Renault Zoe, Nissan Leaf, and Tesla Model S.

I’m very curious to see how the rankings change following the implementation of Germany’s new EV & PHEV subsidies. For now, here’s how the plug-in vehicle (PEV) market as a whole splits out (apologies that I do not have the full data for the models in the “other” categories):

Top-Selling EV Models In France

France EV Sales
As you can see, the French Renault Zoe still dominates the EV market in France. Also, while the Peugeot iOn is basically the same car as the original Mitsubishi i-MiEV, it sells pretty well, and the quite-basic Bollore Blue Car holds onto the #4 spot in the pure-EV market despite not really having a presence outside of France. I presume it is largely used for the French carsharing company from the billionaire Bollore founder.

Here’s how the French PEV market as a whole splits out (apologies that I do not have the full data for the models in the “other” categories):

Top-Selling EV Models In Netherlands

Netherlands EV Sales
Tesla is clearly king in the pure-EV market in the Netherlands, and the Volvo XC90 T8 now is in the PHEV market.

Here’s how the Dutch PEV market as a whole splits out (apologies that I do not have the full data for the models in the “other” categories and some “unknown” models):

Top-Selling EV Models In Norway

Norway EV Sales
More mature than other EV markets, the market share of EV models is also more spread out, but the e-Golf, Leaf, Outlander PHEV, and Golf GTE have a clear hold on the top 4 spots.

Top-Selling EV Models In UK

UK EV Sales
The UK EV market is still dominated by two models — the Nissan Leaf and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Limited reporting (or data collection) from official sources present a bit of a challenge too, as quite a few sales are attributed to an “unknown” model.

Here’s how the British PEV market as a whole splits out:
